This is an Italian friendship cup called 'Grolla' from Valle d'Aosta. Made out of wood and lacquered black, it is hand carved by local artisans with six spouts and a lid. Started in the 20th Century, the cup is traditionally filled with local coffee and spices, citrus fruit and flaming grappa to keep warm! It is passed around so that each person can drink from one of its spouts. It should never touch the ground and be passed from one hand to another. A sculptural piece with a deeper meaning.
Found in Florence.
Condition: Very good. The wood is in a good condition with some signs of wear on the lacquer mainly around the spouts.
